Dealing with Acne at Any Age

Acne is often associated with the teenage years, but it's possible to still be getting pimples as an adult. This article will explain how you get acne and how to get rid of it.

Acne can be caused by hormones, stress, and diet. Sometimes an outbreak will occur because of one of these factors, but often it's a combination. Acne does not occur in children because the oil-producing glands responsible for acne don't develop until puberty. This is also why some teenagers are more prone to outbreaks than adults.

You've probably heard that certain foods, like sweets, can cause acne. No one's really sure if fatty foods or chocolate really do cause acne, but there are some theories. It's possible that dairy products can have an affect on your skin because of the hormones found in milk. It's also been found that people who eat more calories overall may be more prone to acne. To prevent acne, it's better to focus on how much you're eating rather than what. If you can reduce your daily caloric intake, you may find your skin producing less oil. Less oil on your skin means less acne.

Over the counter acne treatment can come in many forms. You can choose from wipes, creams, and cleansers. If you're an older acne sufferer, certain products may dry out your skin. Look for products designed for adults instead. You may be able to see some results with a special face or body wash and without some of the harsh chemicals. For products that aren't designed specifically to treat acne, look for oil-free on the label. Some face washes won't really cleanse if they're just putting more oil on your face.

Relax! Everybody gets upset when they've got a huge zit before a big date, but stress--along with your hormones and diet--can cause acne to appear. In other words, it might not be a coincidence that you always seem to get pimples when you absolutely want to look your best! For clearer skin, work on dealing with stress. Stress management can be as simple as stopping and taking a few deep breaths during a busy day. Set aside time to listen to music or go for a walk. Learn a few simple yoga poses that you can do anywhere and focus on taking deep, steady breaths while you do them.

For severe acne, you may need to see a dermatologist. If over the counter products and dietary or lifestyle changes aren't helping, make an appointment. Many people struggle with acne for years. Avoid this stress and potential scarring by seeking professional help if you need it.

How often do you touch your face each day? Just as you can't see the oil on your face until it turns into clogged pores or pimples, there's oil on your fingertips. Keeping your hands away from your face can help prevent breakouts by keeping the oils on your fingertips where they belong.

Remember, acne isn't your fault. It can be stressful and upsetting to deal with, but just remember to follow the advice in this article to see clearer skin.
