Simple Tips for Keeping Your Skin Clear

Whether you suffer from the occasional pimple or fight an ongoing battle against acne, the condition is annoying and sometimes painful. While some methods of treating acne depend upon your skin type, here are a few basic tips that may help keep your skin clearer.

1. Stay well-hydrated. Drinking several tall glasses of water each day helps your skin stay plump and radiant-looking, and it may help to combat acne. Skin that is adequately hydrated sheds dead skin cells more efficiently, which can do wonders for your complexion.

2. Wash your pillowcases frequently. Laundering your bed linens prevents bacteria, sebum and other contaminants from building up and clogging your pores as you sleep. Toss your pillowcases in the wash at least once a week, and use hot wash water.

3. Get plenty of rest. Sleep is absolutely essential to a number of functions in your body, and lack of shut-eye shows in your skin. Lack of sleep can leave you stressed, which may lead to breakouts.

4. Keep your hair clean. If you notice pimples along your hairline, the oils from your scalp, along with your hair products, may be the culprits. Wash your hair at least every other day with a shampoo that is appropriate for your hair type. If you use conditioner, make sure to rinse it out prior to washing your face in the shower. This prevents the residue from sitting on your skin or clogging your pores.

5. Get adequate exercise. Exercise boosts circulation, increasing bloodflow to every part of your body, including your skin. Just make sure that you wash your face to remove sweat when your workout is over.

6. Never squeeze a pimple. Popping pimples generally won't help them go away, and this practice may actually do more damage by creating an open wound through which bacteria can enter, leading to further infection. If you suffer from cystic acne, squeezing may cause a pimple to pop under the skin, which prolongs the infection.

7. Always remove your makeup. Not only does this allow your skin to breathe, but it prevents your makeup from clogging your pores while you sleep, leading to breakouts. If you have a chronic issue with forgetting to wash your face, opt for noncomedogenic cosmetics that are less likely to cause problems.

8. Keep your hands off your face. Do not rest your chin in your hands, and try not to touch your face throughout the day. This practice can transfer bacteria from your hands to your face, leading to acne.

9. Do not smoke. While smoking may not directly contribute to acne, it does impede the healing process, and it keeps your hands in close proximity to your face -- a major no-no when you're trying to keep your skin clear.

10. Eat a well-balanced diet to support your skin's health. Essential, skin-nurturing nutrients like vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A and others should ideally be gleaned from the foods you eat. You may take a supplement to make up what you aren't able to consume in your diet, although it may not be as effective.

Acne is an extremely common problem. While there are a number of helpful solutions and products available for treating acne, the tips in this article serve as great, basic guidelines for keeping your skin clear and radiant.
