Sandpaper is one of the "tools" used in order to strip away the top layers of skin. A wire brush is another tool used. It is a legitimate surgical procedure that takes a while to recover from. But after the skin begins to grow back, the scars will be far less noticeable and possibly even gone for good.
Microdermabrasion is the softer, gentler cousin of dermabrasion. This cosmetic procedure is more like a harsh exfoliation, where only the outermost layer of dead skin is removed. This procedure can also be performed at home with a brush or even a wash cloth and a firm hand. Obviously, this would only help for very light acne scarring. It's mostly for deeper cleansing and to get rid of dead skin. However, multiple procedures might help to reduce the appearance of moderate acne scarring that isn't pitted into the face.
