Skincare and Beauty Fixes for Winter Weather Woes

While summer beauty is about baring it all, the bronzed and beach-ready look is a poor choice for the winter months. Changes in temperature, humidity and routine can wreak havoc on your hair, skin and nails, forcing you to explore different options in search of a flattering look. Bundle up and enjoy these winter weather beauty rules.

Dry, flaky skin around your nose and mouth is just one of the hazards of the winter months. If left unchecked, dead skin may clog your pores, leading to breakouts, bumps and even more inflammation. At least once daily, thoroughly wash your face with a creamy or milky facial cleanser. Avoid using bar cleansers, which are notorious for drying out your skin.

Crisp, dry air and blustery winds can attack your skin and leave it splotchy, dry and itchy. In this condition, skin does not always respond favorably to lightweight formulations of your lotions or body care products. Address this shortcoming by temporarily switching to heavier, richer formulas. Look for products with a thick consistency, such as body butters, hydrators and masques. Avoid thin, watery formulas as they cannot offer enough protection against extreme temperatures.

When the thermometer reads below-freezing, the last thing you want to do is leave your house with wet hair. Your initial inclination is to reach for the hair dryer, but you may wish to consider letting your hair dry naturally indoors. Cold winter air saps the moisture from your hair, making it brittle, dull and dry. Frequent blow drying can make the problem worse. If you must use a dryer, do so only after applying a styling product that protects against heat damage.

Unless you have greasy or very fine hair, you should use a rich conditioner on your hair after each time you shampoo. Once weekly, treat your tresses to a deep conditioning treatment to restore shine and bounce. If you have thinning or fine hair, try a lightweight leave-in conditioner, which restores moisture but doesn't weigh your hair down. Whenever you are outdoors for extended periods of time, cover your hair with a scarf or cap as protection.

Unless you don mittens during every waking moment, you may notice that your hands and nails start to look and feel tight, chapped and dry. To counter these unpleasant effects, slather on a generous amount of rich, vitamin-packed hand cream. Coat your palms and fingers, then gently massage any excess into your nail beds. This will fortify and soften your paws within minutes. For more pronounced softening, follow the steps above, then tuck your hands into spa gloves and leave them on overnight. This gives your skin the chance to fully absorb much-needed moisture.

As a woman, you undoubtedly want to look and feel your best year-round. With the winter-proof guidelines from this article, you can do just that. Before you bundle up and head home for the holidays, experiment with a few of these tips. Almost instantly, you should notice improvements in your hair, skin and nails. Bundle up!
